South Africa Taxi Wars: More SANDF, SAPS Deployed

More soldiers have been deployed to join the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town, to put an end to the ongoing taxi wars. Since the start of the year, at least 80 people have been killed in taxi-related shootings. eNCA reports that over the last two weeks, violence has erupted again in the city despite a peace agreement between warring factions. Now, local government and police are focused on restoring calm. https://youtu.be/4Z9a3iBbRcY eNCA s Monique Mortlock shares more details in the video above. Violence is very common on South Africa s various taxi routes. Mini-bus taxi owners are part of a multi-billion Rand industry in South Africa and the recent killings in the Western Cape show just how far some are willing to go to take out competitors for a piece of the lucrative pie. In February this year, Western Cape Transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela says efforts have been made by the provincial government to resolve the feuds between rival taxi associations but says the taxi industry has a tendency not to obey the law.
